What is eco-Melton Wool?
Share
There is a grand old saying among those of us who love wandering the wild spaces of these islands: there is no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothing. Anyone who has ever spent a day tracking a high ridge in the Cairngorms, or walking the dramatic coastal paths of western Britain, knows exactly what I mean. Our maritime climate is a wonderfully fickle beast. One moment you are walking under a bright, clear sky, and the next, a wild Atlantic draft sweeps in, bringing a damp, biting chill and a driving drizzle that gets into your very bones.
For years, the modern outdoor world has pushed us toward rustling, crinkling synthetic jackets. But out on the hill, there is a quiet, traditional alternative that outperforms them all, and it is rooted deeply in our own heritage.
I’m talking about eco-MELTON™ recycled wool, and we are incredibly proud to craft this remarkable fabric right here in Scotland. It is, quite simply, the ultimate all-weather armor for the British outdoors and it won't cost you the earth.
What Exactly is Melton Wool?
If you were to step back a few generations, you’d find that the sailors, shepherds, and outdoor workers who lived their lives exposed to the elements didn't rely on plastics. They relied on wool.
True Melton is a very special kind of wool. It isn’t loosely knitted or woven like your favourite winter jumper. Instead, it undergoes a historic traditional process where heat, moisture, and mechanical pressure lock the wool fibres tightly together. This creates a dense, heavily felted fabric with a smooth finish. It feels incredibly robust, like a soft, protective shield designed specifically to keep the elements at bay.
The TEKO Way: Giving Wool a Second Life
As folk who love the wilderness, we have a deep responsibility to look after the land we walk on. That’s why our eco-MELTON™ process is entirely circular.
We take premium, post-consumer wool garments and manufacturing off-cuts that were bound for the scrap heap and carefully breathe new life into them. The wool is gently shredded back to its raw fibres, re-spun, and then woven into new Melton fabric.
But here is the beautiful part: we don’t use any chemical dyes. Traditional dye vats use thousands of litres of fresh water and can leave a nasty chemical footprint. Instead, we sort the recycled wool meticulously by colour before spinning it. The rich, earthy tones of our outdoor shirts, shackets, and waistcoats come entirely from the original wool itself. It’s a clean, honest process that respects our waters and glens.
Built for the Realities of the British Hillside
So, how does it actually perform when you’re out active in the elements? Truly magnificently.
A Natural Windbreaker: Because the wool is so densely felted, eco-MELTON™ cuts right through those bitter, biting winds that catch you on an exposed summit.
Defies the Drizzle: Wool fibers have a natural, waxy coating. Combined with our ultra-tight Scottish weave, light rain and coastal sea mist simply bead up and roll off the fabric rather than soaking through.
It Breathes With You: Unlike synthetic waterproofs that trap your body heat and leave you feeling clammy and cold the moment you stop for a rest, wool is a living fiber. It regulates your temperature beautifully, keeping you warm when it's freezing, yet breathing freely when you’re working hard up a steep incline. And even if you do get caught in a proper downpour, wool uniquely retains its insulating properties to keep you warm when wet.
Wool is naturally anti-microbial. You can wear your eco-MELTON™ shacket day after day on a multi-day backpacking trip, and it will remain completely fresh and odor-free.
Our Promise to You: A Companion for Life
There are some folks in the outdoor market charging an absolute fortune for heritage wool gear these days, often leaning heavily on fancy branding. We prefer to let our craftsmanship do the talking.
In fact, we believe in this fabric and workmanship so much that every single TEKO eco-MELTON™ garment comes with a Lifetime Guarantee.
If a seam fails or a defect appears while you’re out enjoying the wild spaces, we’ll repair or replace it. We don't want our gear ending up in a landfill after a season or two; we want it to become an old, dependable friend that accompanies you on your adventures for decades to come.
Next time you head out to face the unpredictable and changeable British weather, lwrap yourself in a bit of genuine, sustainable Scottish wool heritage. You won't regret it.
See you out on the hill,
The TEKO Team
